I am the wild saxman blowing to stratospheric heights.
I am the bare-bones Bukowski revealing truth in
    misery.
I am the collective identity and warmth of the cluster
    of friends, driving
Everywhere and never getting lost.
But I am the frustrated and lonely traveler of
Indecision, always pulled back by
Cowardice and uncertainty.
I am the musical future of expression
Bursting from nothing.

I am closing my eyes, just for a while
to create an imaginary place.

where souls are watched
demons are lost
and where prayers aren’t the devil’s to take.

this situated dream is too blinding to see
for the pawns enclosed in the game

but a roll of the dice
sparks a chance to ignite
the reality of just an escape.

my closed eyes are open.

Markings/Inscriptions:
Parked next to a locked gate
our footsteps were quiet in the darkness
as waves licked boats in the distance and
everyone from the day was long gone,

I inhaled a familiar salty scent
a nervous excited wind rushed by
we sat on the soft sand
together for the first time,
leaning on him we were the only ones there,
but it felt as if we were the only ones anywhere,

a flash awoke the black canvas
a distant storm was engulfing the night sky
wondrous sparks hit the shimmering water
but the soft murmur of I Love You
calmed the puzzled jagged danger.

we are dust
clusters in an elegant suspended ballet
a dress rehearsal in thin air
beings of restless fragility
hesitant entwined wisps
unfolding ourselves to the golden hour
afternoon light soaking through
a quiet window
granules drifting in pirouettes
venturing and tedious
grazing patches of rich luminescence
pouring across a vacant wall
settling in familiar crescents
of light
and then still
gently interlacing
shaping our own sentimental galaxies
and then fading light
hanging in emptiness
unseen in sustained existence
yearning

Markings/Inscriptions:
Dew drops drizzled off my car in the dark morning,
like ice cream melting down the side of a cone.
Scurrying out the door in my hot pink sequined dress,
stomach turning.
Makeup done, hair slicked and styled,
but my emotions were cluttered.
I drove slowly down the winding roads,
my mind racing like the motorcyclist that sped by.
Trying to remember all the steps,
I played the dance over and over through all the
    different chambers of my brain,
letting each body part embrace the motion.
Behind stage, girl after girl peeled onto the stage
    out of the wings.
Watching patiently the profiles of each artist,
my hands and body began to shake even more.
“Welcome entry number 163!” stunned me still.
Taking the floor, the booming music collided with
    the quiet exhilaration
and joy that swam through me.
A deep breath, a bow and a grin from the judges,
I did it.

It’s not a big deal –
Smoke the weed and forget the world;
everyone’s doing it.
Get drunk and pass out;
everyone’s doing it.
Put on pounds of make-up;
everyone’s doing it.
Wear low pants and show off your lace thong;
everyone’s doing it.
Dye your hair and burn it with a flat iron;
everyone’s doing it.
Look like a Barbie and act like one too;
everyone’s doing it.
Have sex at 16 and become a pregnant teenager;
everyone’s doing it.
Act like you don’t care what people think –
and then cry yourself to sleep.
everyone’s doing it.
everyone’s doing it.
everyone’s doing it.

The bandwagon’s full –
But don’t worry.
I’m sure they can make room for one more.
Because everyone’s doing it.

I hear him whisper in the wind
blowing through empty branches
telling me he’s still here

I see him in the shadows
during the darkest of nights
telling me he’s watching out for me

warm dancing over my skin
telling me he loves me

I look up to the sky into the moon and stars
he knows I miss him and he smiles back down at me
I know he still watches me

Inches,
Pounds,
Comparisons
From then to now
Number of smiles, number of frowns
Measure in feelings

Markings/Inscriptions:
I am a hunter.
Aware of every cloud.
Every bird.
All that blue,
so many shades of blue. I
take a final silent breath
and leap
as high
as far
as powerfully
as my body is capable of,
and then some.
I freeze at my climax,
then begin my descent down to Earth.
I land feet first,
then hands.
I leave proud.
I hit my target.
I walk away,
with a piece
of sky in hand.

One bite of an apple
And I was never able to bite into another again.
One bite at the wrong side of my mouth
And now I can only eat in small pieces.
One bite at the wrong angle
Can change the way it feels forever.
Just one innocent bite
And I will forever hear that clicking sound
When I wake up,
When I eat,
When I yawn.
Just one seemingly harmless bite
And the next thing the doctor tells you:
“Lockjaw.”
Now I know why they call it the forbidden fruit.

Markings/Inscriptions:
Fair Lady sang her lips so blue
To drop that bridge from under you
As eyes gazed off into the sea
And steps had fell in reverie

     – It’s never worth the better view

Your lungs fought for the air they drew
And caused your lips to shiver blue
The moment’s but a memory
That’s bound your thoughts in misery

of London Bridge.

The water’s black took hold, and grew
It’s darkened depths you’ve wandered to
“Poor boy, give up and let it be”
reflections stopped and said to me
     – It’s never worth the better view

of London Bridge.

Swaying in a wooden cradle
My angel slept without a sound
Eyes as vibrant as the deep sea
Chestnut locks draped around

Precious cheeks woven by God
A halo on her head
Her smile outshines the sun
My sister, my angel

Like a butterfly she grew
Her wings were ready to fly
Vivid colors swept the air
Her cocoon was left behind

When times are full of sorrow
My angel is always there
Reminder of earth’s goodness
God’s love rests in her hands

In a world surrounded by change
One thing will always be true
I’ll love her till the very end
My sister, my life long friend

Description:   Teen poem printed on styrene placards and displayed in the interior ad spaces of selected buses in the HART system.

Markings/Inscriptions:
I am tired of being time’s lady,
carried around as arm candy,
on an intangible journey
of rainy days and birthdays.
His wages are my limited memories;
jewels that give meaning to his limitless
seconds and minutes.
I’ve given him shape,
without which he’d be like the curves of my body;
nonexistent.
And in spite of my unrequited gift,
I always beg him for more.
He tells me “live in the moment,”
but moments slip through my fingers like sand
and before another blink,
he’s used me again like an ‘87 Monte Carlo.
This pimp says I’m the gun to his holster,
but judging by the infinite bullets,
I know he’s waiting to trigger
more of my laughter and death glares
and outcries against Minus the Bear,
so that he can have more of me,
and I, less of him.

Description:   Teen poem printed on styrene placards and displayed in the interior ad spaces of selected buses in the HART system.

Markings/Inscriptions:
There’s a lot of things that don’t make sense
like how we use pennies and they use pence
How they call it football
and we call it soccer
and how not every door has a knocker
When you look at a spoon and it’s upside down
How you jump and always land on the ground?
Like when we sleep and they’re awake
but soon they’ll need to take a break
And how we are small but grow so big
how some people have hair and others wear wigs
Why a frog always says ribbit
but that’s just life
and how we live it!

Markings/Inscriptions:
maybe it was easier
when X’s and O’s
were for tic-tac-toe
and we understood
it was just a game.

because now some people think
it’s still all about winning by getting
three in a row
and using the first two
just to score.

and now, it’s more complicated
than a playground rhyme
and you use more caution
than you need for
hopscotch.

She’s waiting by the river’s edge
For faded memories lost
Relentless sounds of silence
Beneath the frigid layers of frost

She whispers to the dimming light
“Where have my children gone?”
And in response lies emptiness
Deserted by the sun

A figure once thought flawless
For unrivaled natural grace
Now falls into the empty void
Her mind is lost in space

Eternally secluded fate
Amid chirps of absent birds
Her limbs timelessly frozen
In a song of silent words

Always ticking
Always tocking
Floating away…
into the past
is the present
will be the future

Trying to fight
a war always lost.
Rush, rush, rush

The past is behind us
so is time
Yet still ahead
of
the future

Bound by eternity
Preaches of yet to come
Never questioned
Always fought.

Defines existence.
Brings about the new
Takes away the old.
The natural order of
the universe
Time

The rough elegance of chalky lines
Never fails to catch my eye.
I can study them for hours, put to use in the most
    basic image.

Making simple shapes beautiful.

To the paper as the path of my skis are
To the fresh-fallen snow.
Scratchy lines
Transforming a blank canvas into perfection,
My path an image I plot in my mind,
Turning points on the uncharted ground ahead
Like curves in a body I see coming to life on a sheet.
Two loves combined as one,
In my mind.

Markings/Inscriptions:
there isn’t always a tomorrow
the day will come to bring such sorrow
so why whittle away the hours
hiding from your work like cowards
putting off until the next day
that which can be done today
work may not always be fun doing
but get it done while you still are moving
don’t watch as the hours slip away
have time to relax on another day
so while this time is here just grab it
procrastination can be such a nasty habit

Markings/Inscriptions:
What would life be like
If the world was upside down?
The sky shall be a floor of air
A smile to be a frown.

To race among the stars
Look up to grass above
All sadness turned to times of joy
And hate turned into love.

Our love comes from our brains
And thoughts found in our hearts
Beginnings would be a finish line
The end would be the start.

Our friends become our enemies
And chance becomes our fate
The world becomes a different place
And changing it’s too late.
