Real Property Tax Exemptions

The Exemption period for the 2024 Tax year (December 2024 -November 2025) has ended.

Please contact the Town of Huntington Assessor's Office in the Fall to be put on the mailing list for the new application forms for 2025/26 tax year, which are due by March 1st 2025.


All real property within the Town is assessed, but not all of it is taxable.  Some properties, such as those owned by religious organizations or governments, are completely exempt from paying property taxes.  Others are partially exempt, such as veterans who qualify for an exemption on part of their homes, and homeowners who are eligible for the School Tax Relief (STAR) program.

The Assessor's Office is responsible for the administration and processing of all real property tax exemptions applicable to the Town of Huntington.

If a real property owner ceases to qualify for a real estate tax exemption, they must notify the Assessor in writing within 30 days of ineligibility.

If a real property owner believes that his or her property is eligible for a particular exemption, it is important to note that

All Exemption Applications must be filed on or before March 1st.  No email or faxed applications will be accepted.  Original applications must be received by March 1st.

ALL EXEMPTION APPLICANTS WILL RECEIVE DECISIONS IN THE MAIL IN THE NEAR FUTURE WHICH WILL INCLUDE THE PROCESS FOR GRIEVING THE EXEMPTION DECISIONS TO THE BOARD OF ASSESSMENT REVIEW.  
Any hearings conducted will be transcribed and available upon request at the Assessor’s Office.

REMINDER-you are still under an obligation to advise the Assessor’s Office if qualifications change due to someone’s death, ownership change, primary residence change.

 

 Senior Citizen & Low Income

 The Town of Huntington and all of its school districts have opted to grant a reduction on the amount of property taxes paid by qualifying senior citizens (Persons turning 65 in the calendar year in which the application is due). This is accomplished by reducing the taxable assessment of the senior's home by as much as 50%.

The application for Seniors with Limited Income is mailed out by January.  Please call the Assessor's office in the Fall to be placed on a mailing list for this exemption.  The phone number is 631-351-3226. 

 

Disability & Low Income

The application for Disability Low Income is mailed out by January. Please call the Assessor's office in the Fall to be placed on a mailing list for this exemption. The phone number is 631-351-3226.   


Disability Low Income

In the Town of Huntington, property that (1) is owned by one or more persons with disabilities; by spouses or by siblings, at least one of whom has a disability and whose income is limited by reason of such disability, and (2) is used exclusively for residential purposes is partially exempt from general municipal taxes.
