Exemptions FAQ’s

Is there a deadline to file exemption applicaions?

• Yes.  All exemption applications must be filed with the Assessor’s office by March 1 (known as the “Taxable Status Date”) in order for the exemption to be applied to your next tax bill. If March 1st falls on a weekend, then all exemptions must be filed by the following Monday.  Applications can be mailed or hand delivered to the Assessor in Room 100 at Huntington Town Hall, 100 Main Street, Huntington, NY 11743. No emailed or faxed applications will be accepted.

Can I get a summary of Tax Exemptions available to homeowners?

How Do I get Information on and apply for STAR Exemptions?

• The procedures for obtaining the Basic STAR and the Enhanced STAR exemptions have drastically changed over the past several years pursuant to New York State law.  The changes have placed more responsibility for both exemptions in the hands of the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance, Office of Real Property (hereinafter “NYS DTF).  For a thorough review of both exemptions, you should review the STAR information on the NYS DTF website by clicking here.  The following is a summary of the revised procedures for obtaining a STAR exemption.

• If you purchased your home after March 1, 2015, you must register with NY State for the Basic STAR Exemption.  New York State STAR Registration.

 

What about the Enhanced STAR Exemption?

• Senior Citizens (age 65 and older) where the combined income of the property owners (or the combined income of the owner and resident spouse) is $98,700 or less are eligible for Enhanced STAR.

 • New York State requires all applicants to participate in the NYS Income Verification Program (IVP) by supplying their social security numbers.

• After the application for the 2024/25 tax year is completed, the Enhanced STAR IVP applicant will no longer be required to file an annual application with the Assessor’s Office, or NYS DTF.  The NYS DTF will be solely responsible for annually approving persons entitled to the Enhanced STAR exemption.

How Do I renew my Enhanced STAR Exemption?

• If you have applied for the Enhanced STAR and signed up for the Income Verification Program, the NYS Department of Taxation & Finance verifies your income eligibility annually, making your renewal automatic.
• After the application for the 2024/25 tax year is completed, the Enhanced STAR IVP applicant will no longer be required to file and annual application with the Assessor's Office, or NYS DTF.  The NYS DTF will be solely responsible for annually approving persons entitled to the Enhanced STAR exemption.

• The Senior Low Income RP-467 Form will be available in January. You can call the Assessor’s Office at (631) 351-3226 to be placed on a mailing list and this form will be mailed to you in January. 

Can I get a Senior Citizens with Limited-Income Exemption Application?

• Applications are not available until the end of December. Please call the Assessor’s office at (631) 351-3226 to be put on a mailing list.
• Each of the owners must be a senior (age 65 and older) by December 31st of the application year (except for husband and wife, or siblings, where only one must be 65 or older). The property must be a legal residence, used for residential purposes and occupied by all the owners.
• Maximum income level is $58,400 for the Town of Huntington and for the County (Social Security is included as income). Applicants are allowed to deduct documented medical and prescription drug expenses actually paid. (Medical expenses reimbursed through insurance are disallowed.)
• The Senior Citizens Limited-Income Exemption application is available in January on the Forms & Applications page.

How do I get a Renewal Application for the Senior Citizens with Limited Income Exemption?

• A renewal Application will be automatically mailed to you in December. 
• The Senior Citizens renewal application is available in January on the Forms & Applications page.
• All Exemption Applications must be in to the Assessor’s Office by March 1.

How do I get Information on the Persons with Disabilities and Limited-Income Exemption?

• The property must be the primary legal residence of owner/applicant.
• The owner must be a person with a disability and have a documented award letter from the Social Security Administration certifying applicant's eligibility to receive SSDI or SSI. (Award letters from the Railroad Retirement Board, State Commission for the Blind & Visually Handicapped and US Postal Service are also accepted).
• Applications become available at the end of December. Please call the Assessor’s office at (631) 351-3226 to be put on a mailing list.
• All Exemption applications must be completed, signed and received by the Assessor’s Office on or before March 1 of that year.

How Do I File for a Alternative Veterans Exemption?
• You must have served during wartime. (Additional consideration for combat zone service and service connected disabilities.)

How do I File for an Eligible Funds Exemption?

• Veterans who served before 1984 and purchased property using service pensions, bonuses or insurance under the G.I. Bill are allowed to transfer their existing eligible funds from one property to another if they sell one house and buy another.

How do I File for the Cold War Veterans Exemption?

• For Veterans who served during non-war, non-conflict years after WWII (1945) and before the Persian Gulf Conflict (1991).

How do I File for the Gold Star Parent Veterans Exemption?

• For the parents of a son or daughter who died in the line of duty while serving in the US Armed Forces during a period of war.
• Gold Star Parent Veterans Exemption is part of the Alternative Veterans Exemption.

Can I get Information about the Home Improvement Exemption?

• The assessment increase for residential construction and home improvements that add taxable value to an existing home can be phased-in over nine (9) years. The maximum amount of assessed value that may be phased-in is 600 in assessment. Eligibility Requirements: 
1) Property must be a one or two-family residence. 
2) Construction is current and has all required permits. 
3) Does not apply to pools, sheds, decks, r/o patios, home and garages only.
4) One-time application must be filed timely (on or before March 1) to be considered for the following December’s property tax bill.

Can I get information on the First Time Homebuyers Exemption?

• This Exemption is for “newly constructed homes” purchased by “first-time” homebuyers.
• A “first-time homebuyer” is any person who—and whose spouse—has not owned a primary residential property during the previous three (3) years and who do not own a vacation or investment home. 
• A qualifying “newly constructed home” is a one-or two-family residence, townhouse or condominium, which was constructed after November 28, 2001, is owner-occupied, and was not previously occupied.
