Huntington Board Sets May as “Pets for Vets” Month

Adoption fee to be waived for veterans and active military personnel seeking pets

The Huntington Town Board has declared May “Pets for Vets” month at the Town Animal Shelter, voting to waive the animal adoption fee for veterans and active military personnel during the month of May 2014.

At its April 8 meeting, the Board voted to waive the $103.50 fee charged for adoption of dogs at the Shelter. The League for Animal Protection, which runs the adjacent cat shelter under an agreement with the Town, has also agreed to waive its adoption fees for veterans and active military personnel during the month.

To obtain the fee waiver, a person must present documentation such as discharge papers or current military identification. More information can be obtained by calling 631-754-8722 or by visiting the shelter, 106 Deposit Road in East Northport.

In other action, the Town Board:

-- appropriated $170,000 from the Parks and Recreation Capital Reserve Fund for annual sand replenishment at West Neck and Hobart Beaches and for the purchase of a new marine launch to replace the existing, 30-year-old one used in conjunction with the Town’s launch program out of Gold Star Battalion Beach.

-- authorized the allocation of $300,000 from the Environmental Open Space and Park Improvement Fund for the installation of bioretention swales for sustainable storm water management, landscaping and brickwork as part of the Gerard Street Parking Project.

-- approved the acquisition of a small parcel owned by the Greenlawn Water District for an expansion of Phragmites Park in Centerport.

-- approved a resolution asking that state Environmental Conservation Law or state regulations be established to regulate the catching of sand sharks (also known as smooth dogfish) and to require that those caught unintentionally be returned immediately to the waters without unnecessary injury.

-- authorized executing a contract with Parkmobile USA Inc. to provide a mobile phone application for persons to pay for metered parking in Huntington Village and at the Huntington Long Island Rail Road station. Under the proposed agreement, which would have no cost to the Town, residents will receive a five-cent discount on Parkmobile’s convenience fee.

-- declared April organ donation month in the Town and reminded residents to add their names to the New York State Donate Life Registry.

-- authorized entering into an agreement with the Village of Huntington Bay under which the Town will patrol and enforce Town Code regulations in waters within 1,500 feet of the village shoreline.

-- granted a five-business-day extension for senior citizens receiving the Enhanced STAR or senior citizen exemption on their property to pay their property taxes.

-- reappointed Peggy Boyd, Alicia Lawrence and Elizabeth Hubbard and appointed Pilar Moya-Mancera to terms on the Affordable Housing Advisory Board.

-- scheduled a May 6 public hearing on a proposal to restructure the General Services Department into seven separate divisions, each with their separate duties and obligations, and to create a second deputy director position to help administer the department.
