8/18/2014 - August 18th Update: First Annual Kite Flying Contest

First Annual Kite Flying Contest

Today is Monday, August 18th and tonight's movie: CLOSE ENCOUNTERS of the Third Kind & the KITE FLYING CONTEST will be taking place at PETER NELSON PARK in Huntington Station.

The Town of Huntington will be holdings its inaugural Kite Flying Contest on Monday, August 18th at Peter Nelson Park in Huntington Station – in conjunction with its last outdoor movie of the summer – CLOSE ENCOUNTERS of the Third Kind (Rated PG).

“Since I introduced the movies on the lawn program eleven years ago, we’ve not only enjoyed great movie entertainment but also had a lot of fun at each movie venue. The First Annual Kite Flying Contest is just one more way to encourage families to enjoy some great family time outdoors,” remarked Councilman Mark Cuthbertson. “ Whether you are young or old, anyone can fly a kite and I couldn’t think of a more fitting way to close out this summer’s movie series than with some colorful UFO’s in the outfield before the showing of the 1977 classic – Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” added Cuthbertson.

The contest is open to kites in all shapes and sizes, except metal framed flyers. Winners will receive a medal in one of the four following categories: Smallest Kite, Largest Kite, Most Colorful and Best Homemade.
