Town of Huntington, NY - News Details

11/21/2017 - Give A Dog A Dream Receives Donation from New Retailer
East Northport --Huntington Councilman Eugene Cook, representing his Town Board colleagues, joined with officials from the Town’s Animal Shelter November 18 in accepting a $500 check for the Town’s Give A Dog A Dream Foundation from Ocean State Job Lot, on the occasion of the New England-based closeout retailer opening its newest store at 3983 Jericho Turnpike.

The company, in opening its third Long Island location and 11th in New York State, also contributed a pallet of food to be shared by the Animal Shelter and the group VetsDogs, as well as pallets of food to the Northport Food Pantry and to Long Island Cares/The Harry Chapin Food Bank.

“We’re proud to expand our business further into New York and open a new location East Northport. The town has been very welcoming and helpful working with us during the store’s remodeling phase,” said David Sarlitto, executive director of Ocean State Job Lot and Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation. “We’re glad to support the local economy with new jobs and by restoring a storefront that was previously vacant. We are also deeply committed to demonstrating philanthropic leadership in the communities Job Lot serves, and we are already expanding that legacy in this area with donations to local organizations.”

Give A Dog A Dream is the charitable foundation the Town formed to raise money earmarked for providing specialized services for dogs at the Town’s animal shelter. Give A Dog A Dream provides dogs in need with access to specialized health care and surgery, customized training regimens, advanced behavior modification programs and immersive socialization and wellness programs. It offers resources such as training and education to both dog owners and surrounding animal shelters. It coordinates and sponsors pet adoption events and fundraisers to increase opportunities for dogs to find loving adoptive families and new homes. Its overall goal is to prevent pet surrenders to animal shelters and unnecessary euthanasia and to strengthen the ability of the animal shelter to provide support for abandoned and displaced dogs.

In his remarks during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Councilman Cook expressed the Town’s appreciation for the donations and welcomed the company to the community. He noted that he was a longtime customer of one of the store’s New England locations and was excited about the chain coming to Huntington. Also attending the grand opening were Assembs. Andrew Raia and Chad Lupinacci.

Now in its 40th year, Ocean State Job Lot is a growing, privately held retail chain with 127 stores in New England, New York, and New Jersey, approximately 5,000 employees, and annual sales exceeding $650 million. Job Lot sells brand name, first quality merchandise at closeout prices. Shoppers find an ever-changing array of household goods, apparel, pet supplies, seasonal products (holiday, gardening, patio, pool and beach supply), and kitchen pantry staples at a fraction of their typical price.

The Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation has a long history of philanthropic leadership, placing emphasis on local food banks in communities where Job Lot operates stores. The Foundation also supports medical and literacy initiatives, disaster relief efforts, the performing arts, military service members and their families, and special needs and foster children.
