Huntington – Huntington Town Clerk
Andrew P. Raia is pleased to announce that the Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation
will be offering the 2020 Honorable Peter Fox Cohalan Scholarship in American
History to Nassau/Suffolk County High School Seniors. The scholarship
application will be awarded to a graduating senior who will be pursuing an
undergraduate degree with a concentrated study of a minimum of 24 credit hours
in American History and/or American Government.
“You can never get enough history,”
said Raia, who as Town Clerk is also the Records Management Officer (RMO) for
the Town thus the custodian of Town records. Residents can get an educational
tour to see Town manuscripts, including the original deed signed by European
settlers in 1653. As paraphrased by writer and philosopher George Santayana,
'Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.’
The awardees must attend a 4-year
accredited college or university or academic institution subject to Robert D.L.
Gardiner Foundation’s Board approval. The scholarship award is worth
$10,000 yearly for 4 years of degree completion.
Applications are due by March 31,
2020; notifications will be sent out in the first week of May 2020. The
Foundation will accept a maximum of 3 applicants for each High School located
in Nassau/Suffolk County, NY.
“I am so pleased that the Robert
D.L. Gardiner Foundation is offering this scholarship to help students realize
their dreams of advancing their education,” said Raia. “The cost of college is
continually climbing, and it is essential to let our children know that going
to college can still be an affordable decision. There are many young
adults on Long Island who are deserving of awards such as this one. I encourage
all eligible to apply as every opportunity helps.”
