Town of Huntington, NY - News Details

9/23/2014 - Councilman Cuthbertson Enacts Legislation That Prohibits Smoking on Town Beaches

Those who prefer to cool off and enjoy a day at the beach will not have to worry about secondhand smoke, following a measure that was spearheaded by Councilman Mark Cuthbertson that will now prohibit smoking on all Town of Huntington beaches.

“People have expressed health concerns in regard to being exposed to a smoker’s secondhand smoke while at the Town beach,” remarked Councilman Cuthbertson. “This legislation is not designed to place a ban on smoking at our beaches entirely. It’s simply asking that if you are at the beach, you give people the courtesy of going to the parking lot,” added Cuthbertson.

This legislation, which passed unanimously on September 16, will now prohibit smoking on all nine Town of Huntington beaches, which includes: Crab Meadow, Geisslers, Asharoken, Hobart, Centerport, Fleet’s Cove, Crescent, Gold Star Battalion and West Neck Beaches.

“I am pleased that we have passed a common-sense measure to limit exposure to secondhand smoke at our wonderful beaches,” stated Mr. Cuthbertson.
