Upgrades to Stormwater Collections Systems in the Bay Complex

The Town of Huntington first began development of its “Centerport Harbor Stormwater Management Project” in 1996, when it submitted a proposal to NYS DEC for a Non-Point Source stormwater mitigation implementation grant designed to reduce bacteriological loading in the waters of Centerport Harbor.

Project #1The Centerport sub-watersheds are located adjacent to significant shellfish resources and the Huntington Beach Civic Association beach, that provides swimming and recreation facilities serving over 1,000 residences. The DEC grant award (C-003553) permitted the Town to install new leaching catch basins and StormCeptor® technology that traps oils and other floatables and allows sediments to settle out for later removal.

Project #2: Based on the success of that contract the Town applied for and received a second grant (C-301499) for the installation of additional stormwater mitigating structures with associated piping around in the Centerport watershed. The location and number of structures installed is noted below:

 • North of Mill Dam Road (±1250’): four (4) catch basins and four (4) leaching basins.
 • North of Mill Dam Road (±1600’): three (3) leaching basins.
 • North of Mill Dam Road (±2300’): three (3) leaching basins.
 • Intersection of Harvest Hill Lane & Fleets Cove Road: five (5) catch basins and four (4) leaching basins.
 • North of Harvest Hill Lane & Fleets Cove (±400’):  four (4) catch basins and four (4) leaching basins.
 • North of Harvest Hill Lane & Fleets Cove (±1000’): two (2) catch basins and two (2) leaching basins.
 • North of Harvest Hill Lane & Fleets Cove (±1375’): two (2) catch basins and four (4) leaching basins.
 • Intersection of Harvest Hill Lane & Fleets Cove Road: five (5) catch basins and two (2) leaching basins.
 • North of Harvest Hill Lane & Fleets Cove (±330’): three (3) catch basins and one (1) leaching basin.
 • North of Harvest Hill Lane & Fleets Cove (±470’): three (3) catch basins and one (1) leaching basin.

Project #3: The State and Town joined forces on another project (C-301501) designed to improve water quality in Centerport Harbor using Best Management Practices pursuant to the Town’s MS4 SPDES permit.

It incorporated the installation of collection, containment and treatment structures including catch basins, leaching pools and Stormceptors® at five locations within the Knollwood Beach/Fleets Cove sub-watershed (bounded by Cove Road, Fleets Cove Road, Knollwood Road and Bayview Drive.)

A sixth location was added at Fleets Cove Road between Cove Road and Kent Drive that included a 36-inch diameter collection and distribution pipe. A final revision added a series of leaching basins with oil/debris stop features on Bayview Drive connected to the Fleets Cove Beach outfall.

Project #4: The Town was awarded one additional state contract (C-302549) for the Installation of Stormceptor® sedimentation collection basins in the sub-watershed catchment areas listed below by acreage and number of homes impacted:
