Wednesday, July 5th, come see the Huntington Community Band perform! Tonight's HCB concert theme is: "THE CLASSICS RETURN" featuring a rich program of familiar music from the classical repertoire to some modern day fun! Katie Noonan (member of our trombone section and band director in the Middle Country Public Schools) joins us as guest conductor.
Thursday, July 6th, come see the Long Island Dance Consortium perform! The Long Island Dance Consortium (LIDC) is composed of presenters, dance advocates, dance professionals, Arts Councils and dance related studios. This evening's program will showcase 5 Dance companies including The Red Hot Mamas, a unique group of tap dancers aged 59-87, who will perform with their usual sophistication and vivacity. The brilliant dancers of the Long Island Dance Company will perform their sensational cutting edge choreography and the talented dancers of North Shore Dance will delight the audience with their talent and boundless energy.
*The Northport Community Band will also perform on Thursday, July 6th at
the Robert W. Krueger Bandstand in Northport in the Northport Village Park.
at 8:30pm. Listeners can sit on blankets or lawn chairs in front of the bandstand, or even enjoy the music from their boats. The band's musicians are volunteers from all walks of life and include local students, teachers and professional musicians.*
Friday, July 7th, come experience Blick Bassy and his musical talent! Singer, composer, guitarist and Cameroonian percussionist, Blick Bassy formed his first band in Cameroon at the age of 17 called The Jazz Crew and would later develop into Macase, an inventive jazz fusion group inspired by local rhythms. After 10 years of performing with Macase, Blick grew frustrated with the lack of infrastructure for an artist in Cameroon and decided to move to Paris. It was there, in 2005, that Blick started his solo career, at first collaborating with a wide range of artists, before eventually releasing his debut album Léman (a record that fused West African and Central African rhythms) in 2009, and following it up with Hongo Calling (which was recorded in Brazil following Blick's research into the musical link - mainly through slavery - between Cameroon and Brazil) in 2011. His third album, Akö, Blick describes as "FAB" or "Folk Afro Blues" music. It's a title which perfectly explains the roots of the music, though not hint at the inventiveness within.
Saturday, July 8th, come enjoy "Hairspray" performed by Plaza Theatrical Productions! It's 1962 in Baltimore, Maryland, and quirky, plus-sized, teenage Tracy Turnblad has one dream: to dance on The Corny Collins Show. Tony Award-winning Hairspray continues to be one of the most widely produced musicals today, not only because of its wit and charm, but also because of the beautiful message of acceptance and progress that it portrays. The bright, energetic story of Tracy Turnblad teaches us all to look past the color of one's skin and fight for every human being's equal rights.
Huntington Arts Council is pleased to announce Picture This: Where Performing and Visual Arts Meet, four evenings at the Huntington Summer Arts Festival where performing and visual arts meet in the park to synergize our creative energies. Two evenings will be devoted to photography and two evenings to painting. We encourage artists to e-mail us at info@huntingtonarts.org their best image to add to our website, showcasing the works created. The first of four evenings is Saturday, July 8 - Painting (prior to Hairspray)
