HIGHWAY:
The Huntington Highway Department has been ready for the storm, they’ve been preparing equipment since last weekend.
Report road emergencies to Highway at (631) 499-0444 and at huntingtonny.gov/highway
Superintendent of Highways Andre Sorrentino is asking residents to park their cars in their driveways and off the roads tonight so snow plows can make a clean pass overnight and emergency vehicles can get through. Huntington Village residents should park in the municipal parking lots to allow snow plows to clear roads in downtown Huntington.
The Highway Department has plenty of salt, they have already repaired 21 pieces of equipment that were out of service when they took office. They now have 20 more snow plow contractors than they inherited, for a total of 130 but they can always use more. We need snow plow operators, sanders and equipment -- please call the Huntington Highway Department at (631) 499-0444 or apply online at huntingtonny.gov/highway
Departments of Environmental Waste Management, General Services, Dix Hills Water District, and Streetlighting are lending equipment and labor to the Highway operation. General Services is ready to clear our commuter lots.
COVID PROTOCOLS & STAFFING SHORTAGES:
Most Town Departments, including Highway, Waste Management, and others are experiencing significant COVID quarantine mandate-related staffing shortages due to State protocols, which the Town currently follows. The Town Attorney's office is working on updating these protocols to get employees back to work as soon as is prudent after exposure.
In addition to departments assisting in snow plow operations, various departments are assisting Highway and the Tax Receiver's office with clerical work and routing service calls for storm response Friday to ensure as smooth a storm response as possible.
TOWN HALL & TOWN SERVICES
Based on the current forecast, TOWN HALL will be open at 10:30 AM on Friday.
TAX PAYMENTS:
Receiver of Taxes Jillian Guthman will have her office open at 10:30 AM to accept payments but residents are encouraged to use mail or other methods -- the postmark date will be used to assess timeliness (postmarked by January 10th to avoid the late payment fee), and if you do visit Town Hall, you can drop your tax payment in the black tax payment box by our main entrance to avoid the line.
TRASH PICKUP:
Friday Trash Pickup is cancelled, residents are advised to remove trash from the curb so that snow plows can make a clean pass; routes were attempted at 6:00 AM but conditions were not safe to proceed. Residents on Tuesday/Friday trash collection may put out double the amount curbside on Tuesday. Available Refuse staff is supporting the Highway Department with road plowing operations.
