Town of Huntington, NY - News Details

1/14/2022 - Freezing Temperatures Message from Supervisor Ed Smyth

This is Supervisor Ed Smyth with an emergency message on dropping temperatures, avoiding frozen pipes and the proper use of space heaters, which can also be found on the Town website at HuntingtonNY.gov.

Due to freezing temperatures forecasted for this evening through Sunday morning, please leave one or more cold water faucets running indoors with a light stream of water overnight to prevent pipes from freezing. Protect exposed pipes from the cold and make sure outside faucets or hose bibs are turned off from inside the house.

To prevent a fire when using a space heater:

  • Do not use a heater with any damage, including the cord and plug.
  • Give your heater space, on a flat, solid surface, at least three feet from anything flammable.
  • Do not place your heater or the cord on top of furniture or under anything, including rugs.
  • Keep the power cord exposed and away from foot traffic.
  • Do not use extension cords or power strips, which may cause overheating. Plug the heater directly into a tight-fitting outlet and make sure the heater is the only device plugged into the outlet.
  • To prevent shocks, always keep space heaters away from water and never touch an electric heater if you’re wet.

The Dix Hills Ice Rink is available as a warming center 6AM through 12 Midnight tonight and all weekend, at 575 Vanderbilt Parkway in Dix Hills.

Remember, due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, Town Hall is closed Monday and trash pickup is cancelled Monday.
