Town of Huntington, NY - News Details

5/13/2026 - An Important Message from the Town of Huntington on the Potential LIRR Strike
The Town of Huntington wants residents to be advised that in anticipation of a potential Long Island Rail Road strike, which could begin as soon as Saturday, May 16 at 12:01am, we are monitoring the situation and preparing accordingly. A Long Island Rail Road strike will temporarily cancel train service and impact those who need to commute to work or services, including many Huntington residents. The Town has been closely following the negotiations between the MTA and the LIRR Railroad Workers Unions. We are also participating in regular conversations with MTA staff and local government agencies and municipalities on strike updates and alternative measures to get commuters effectively and safely into their New York City destinations. The Huntington Station LIRR has been designated as one of six commuter shuttle bus locations on Long Island that will take riders to Queens subway locations for travel into the city. We want to assure Huntington commuters that the Town will be working to ensure that preferred parking is designated to residents, including the North and South Parking garages, and parking lots closely adjacent to the train platforms. We will also be working to provide adequate signage to highlight designated parking areas. As you navigate all parking areas, please be advised that there is the potential that there will be picketers on site. There will also be MTA Police, Suffolk County Police and Huntington Public Safety throughout the station and surrounding area. Should a strike occur, the Town of Huntington will provide all available information from the MTA/LIRR on parking, shuttle bus service, accessible travel alternatives, and more. Strike information will be provided on the red banner and newsfeed on our website and social media pages as it becomes available. We advise checking frequently for updates. For current information and details, please visit the MTA's designated strike website: https://www.mta.info/article/lirr-strike-may-2026. Any LIRR or strike inquiries should be directed to the MTA by calling 511. Needless to say, the Town of Huntington is hopeful that the strike will be averted. In any event, we are committed to keeping Town residents and especially our commuters informed of everything you need to know to the best of our ability. Thank you for your attention.
