You affect me
as airborne pollen affects allergy-ridden individuals.
Upon contact I become aggravated,
suddenly nostalgic as you make your annual return.

During the grey winter you go into hibernation.
I become accustomed to my well-being,
but as the growing season approaches, my exasperation
    grows,
peaking as the greens and pinks and yellows appear.

I attempt to expel you from me,
but you are ever-present during these few, concentrated
   months.
No number of sneezes will rid me of you.
Your pollen, like poison, pervades me.

Markings/Inscriptions:
First day of kindergarten, little kids running around –
So eager to see people their own, small size.
They play, laugh and learn –
No judgment, just fun.

Two friends meet, sharing, laughing and playing –
Imagination leading the way –
Setting their differences aside –
No judgment, just fun.

Middle school comes like a lion, coming out of a snail’s
    shell.
The two friends hardly see one another.
They’ve made new friends and the status quo is made.
Judgment starts to take over.

What didn’t matter then, matters now –
Money, fancy clothing and popularity consumes all.
People left in the shadows –
Judgment takes over.

Personalities change, people change.
The two friends don’t even speak anymore.
It’s no longer like kindergarten.
Don’t let judgment take over.

Fall quickly on top of me
and cover my face

Cover all of the blemishes
all of the bad, please erase

Let the wind blow all over
let it sing loud and clear

All your wonderful wind
let the whole world know and hear

Oh please come quickly
and stay for a while

For you have the power
to make everyone smile

Oh snow, dear snow
fall down on me

Snow, don’t go
stay here with me

Markings/Inscriptions:
Our dreams of this perfection
Are just that, they’re dreams
They lead us in the wrong direction
At least that’s how it seems

Trying to fill someone else’s shoes
Is not the way to go
Yet for some reason we don’t refuse
Because we do not know

And in the chase for this perfection
We lose our identity
We no longer see our own reflection
Just what we strive to be

When we find we cannot reach it
For there is always something wrong
We simply just cannot admit
That we knew it all along

If we could only look in the mirror
And know that it is true
That it can’t get clearer
The best person to be is you

Markings/Inscriptions:
The road is too slippery for bicycles
And frigid winds blow
The roof is lined with icicles
And my lawn, a field of snow

Clouds cover the stars at night
Promising large flurries
It’s time for a snowball fight
And to forget all your worries

We gallop through the freezing fluff
And hide among the trees
Rolling balls of snowy stuff
Until our hands begin to freeze

The brawl is finally done
We hope it’s not too late
To enjoy a warmer type of fun
And drink some hot chocolate!

Another playground competition
where little girls in pigtails run wild.
Their colorful bows reflect the sun
that illuminates their missing-toothed smiles.
Little sundresses dance in the soft wind
covering scratched-up knees.
Sesame Street band-aids stop the bleeding.

All the girls are gathered around
the concrete parking lot they call their own.
Some do handsprings or cartwheels,
all trying to out-do the girl who went before.

Markings/Inscriptions:
In the year of my demise,
I walked the sidewalks and the streets.
I watched the lights shine blue and red,
As every word spilled out of my head.

As I walked along the northern lights,
I found that I had taken flight.
And I traveled all through outer space,
Wishing we’d come face to face.

But the stars and moons and Saturn’s rings
Lost meaning and began to sing.
And I listened to that muted sound,
As the rain began to fall down.

I stumbled down upon the earth,
Through the static and the waves.
I made a quick trip to the bank,
And I slept until the morning.

When I woke I wished to see the stars
To walk the line, to fly to Mars.
But I threw my pillow off my bed,
And thought about the day ahead.

Markings/Inscriptions:
A shout of surprise is released
As it is let go
Still in reach of grasping
But those around act with delay

High and higher it gets
Still visible but distant now
Once held in the clutch of your fist
And moments later soaring above all
Climbing farther into the peaks of the atmosphere

You wonder, where will it end up?
In fascination you stare
Then it is barely perceptible
A minuscule dot of color lost in an array of blue
And then with a blink
The balloon vanishes and is forgotten

Markings/Inscriptions:
And here comes the crashing waves seeping in and out,
controlled by the pull of the moon.
The water encompassing the tops of her bare, tanned
    feet.
She digs her toes deeper into the sand pushing past the
    shells and occasional sea glass.
The gritty friction of each grain against her delicate skin
leaves evidence of where she has been,
with a few traces forgotten between her toes.
Oh, how it hurts to leave a footprint that will wash away.
