NexTrex Recycling Plastic Film Initiative

Did you know you can recycle your unused plastic bags?

There is a new recycling effort for Huntington residents – the NexTrex Recycling Plastic Film Initiative.   This opportunity is meant to encourage residents to recycle a portion of waste we currently send to our solid-waste-to-energy facility for incineration.

NexTrex Recycling will allow residents to help repurpose “plastic film” including; shipping bags, grocery bags, bread bags, bubble wrap, dry cleaning bags, zip-loc bags, produce bags, and more and by dropping them at designated collection locations. These recyclables are used by NexTrex Recycling to produce various products including benches like the one pictured below:

The Town of Huntington will participate in a 12 month “challenge” period beginning October 2, 2025  – October 2, 2026. If the Town is successful in collecting 500 pounds of plastic film during this period, we will be eligible to receive a free composite bench!

Plastic Film Drop off locations:
1. Huntington Town Hall, 100 Main Street, Huntington

2. John J. Flanagan Center (Senior Center), 423 Park Avenue, Huntington

3. Huntington Town Recycling Center, 641 New York Avenue, Huntington

*Please note this is a drop off program only. These materials are not accepted curbside because they get caught in the machinery that sorts other valuable recyclables like paper, cans and bottles.*

Since we aren't able to include plastic film in our curbside recycling program, plastic film byproducts wind up in the garbage and get burned at our Waste-to-Energy Facility. Segregating this portion of the waste stream for recycling purposes is a win for everyone.  Come on Huntington, let’s accept the NexTrex challenge and reduce, reuse and recycle!
