"Take-Back" Recycling Programs

Some items not accepted through Huntington’s curbside recycling program can be recycled through a business based “Take-Back Program”.

Take-Back Programs are recycling programs that require the sellers of certain products to take back those products from consumers and recycle them. New York State law often mandates that these items be accepted by retailers or manufacturers.

In order to fully participate in a Take-Back Recycling Program you have to do a little more than place something curbside in your recycling bin. You have to physically take the items to a commercial business participating in the program. This extra effort is well worth the environmental benefits achieved by recycling these products. A good idea is that whenever you have a product to take back, call before you go to ensure that retailers are complying with the law.

All of these items, except auto tires, may be dropped off at the Recycling Center. However depending on where you live in the Town you may find it more convenient to use a Take-Back Recycling Program.

If you are a retailer or service provider and want to know if state law requires you to offer your customers one of these Take-Back Programs you should download our “Take-Back Recycling Guide " to find out your responsibilities.
